Our Beautiful Launderette

Way back in 1994, when one of our clients asked us to design a launderette to challenge the usual preconceptions, we knew exactly where to find inspiration. Even though the design and build were nine years after Nick Kamen’s appearance in ‘that’ Levi’s ad, it had already become the enduring style icon we recognise today.

White Rose Laundries is based in central London and specialises in the commercial laundry. Due to increasing competition, they wanted to expand into the retail sector, asking Bedrock to design their first high street outlet and then refurbish an existing launderette.

The 50s vibe wasn’t just a style makeover; the business model was different too. The launderette would be continuously staffed, and payments made centrally to the operator with variable machine rates depending on the time of day, for example, a ‘happy hour’ during quiet periods. The counter accessed the dry cleaning service, and the addition of a cappuccino machine and bar stools made it a great place to meet and hang out. We sourced all of the posters from the wonderful Vintage Magazine Shop in Brewer Street, Soho, but sadly there wasn’t quite enough room for a jukebox.

The project was featured in FX magazine – with the design team in boxer shorts, of course!
