Designing Coffee Shops & Cafes

At Bedrock Design, we specialise in designing Coffee shops. We love everything about them, the careful planning, the working aspect and most importantly, the execution. It’s important to us that every detail is covered, and most importantly, it’s an area not only to enjoy but to make money.

First Impressions Count!

In the coffee business, the importance of the first impression should never be overlooked. The look and feel of your coffee shop should be a priority, so it’s important to get it right. This is important from a marketing perspective because it can determine who will become your customer. Be sure that there is unity in your brand that people can remember from the interior design to the branding of your take-out food. Stay consistent so people know what to expect when they come in and also when they tell others about you. This is especially important if you are planning to ‘roll out’ more cafes in the future.

Your Layout

A great coffee shop doesn’t just happen, it starts with a great layout. Let’s begin with the customer and their user journey.

  • A great welcome ‘and a wow’ would be nice on entering.
  • Create a natural flow to the counter.
  • Is it clear what you do?
  • Then most importantly, make sure your menu is clear and easy to understand and everyone can read it.

Coffee shops can get pretty busy at peak times. Make sure your customers’ footflow works and your design doesn’t create any bottlenecks.

Importance of Service

Finding the right amount of space in your employee’s workstation is a balancing act. It’s important you plan optimal space to work efficiently, not too large and not too small. It’s fun to think about the design, but the first thing to prioritise is the large equipment you’ll need to bring customers in the door and the space it will take up. This will apply to both the back kitchen and on-counter appliances. Selecting the correct equipment will ensure you can cope with peak traffic times. The last thing you want to be known for is the cafe with the long, slow lines, as customers aren’t likely to return.  It’s a good general philosophy to solve the problem before it ever becomes one.

If your operation is poorly designed, either from the standpoint of ambience or working layout, your opportunity to make a great first impression (and long-term sales) will suffer. Strive to be original, set your coffee bar apart from your competition and have a definite theme and concept in mind before you begin.

At Bedrock Design, we work closely with large chains like Caffè Nero, Universities and small independents. What we don’t know about coffee house design isn’t worth knowing. If you have a unique project and need help to ensure it will be a success, give us a call for an informal chat on 01604 250002.
